Is It Safe to Take Abortion Pills at 13 or 14 Weeks? Online Providers vs. In-Person Care in Columbia, Missouri

At our clinic, we understand that every woman’s situation is unique. Sometimes, life

circumstances, delayed pregnancy symptoms, or challenges accessing early prenatal care can mean that you’re further along in your pregnancy than you expected when you start looking for abortion pills.

If you’re exploring options around 13 or 14 weeks, you’re not alone, and you deserve accurate information and compassionate care. Our goal is to help you understand what’s safe, what’s legal, and what medical steps—like an ultrasound—can protect your health and well-being before making any decisions. Contact us today for a free consultation and screening.

What the FDA Says About Using Abortion Pills After 10 Weeks

The FDA explicitly limits its approved use of a pregnancy termination using mifepristone and

misoprostol - the two abortion-inducing drugs - through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Using it beyond this window is not FDA-approved and can increase your risk

of complications such as:

Woman wearing glasses, white top, and headwrap stands outdoors, hand on shoulder. Jeans and tattoos visible.
  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding

  • Infection

  • Incomplete abortion requiring a follow-up procedure

In rare cases, women have died from abortion pills, particularly those who have had a self-managed abortion at home without medical oversight. The latest study from the EPPC showed that now 1 in 10 women have serious adverse reactions to abortion pills. In addition, the FDA warns about ordering abortion pills online due to the lack of safety measures, incorrect dosage, and the increased risk of tampered or laced pills.

Why an Ultrasound Is Your Safest First Step Before taking any abortion pills, getting an ultrasound is one of the most important steps for your health and safety. Here’s why:

  • It confirms how far along you are. Many people aren’t sure of their exact due date,

and being off by even a week or two can change what methods are safe and effective.

  • It checks for an intrauterine pregnancy, and in some cases, detects an ectopic

pregnancy, a serious condition where the pregnancy develops outside the uterus. The

abortion pill does not treat this and could put your life at risk if not diagnosed first.

  • It ensures you get the proper care for your specific situation. Some pregnancies

may have unique risks that require different treatment or medical follow-up. You also

may be carrying multiples; this can change the cost or type of abortion clinic procedure

or the medical care you receive if you continue your pregnancy.

Without an ultrasound, taking pills at home means guessing—and that can lead to dangerous outcomes if the pregnancy is further along than expected.

Be Extremely Cautious About Online Pill Websites

If a website says they can mail abortion pills for 14 or 15 weeks, this should be a red flag.

Some sites that claim this aren’t licensed or regulated, and the pills they send could be

unsafe, expired, or not real. Other serious risks include:

  • Incorrect dosing or instructions

  • Lack of medical support if complications occur

  • No way to confirm what medication was actually received

It is not considered safe to order abortion pills online or proceed with an abortion without

medical oversight. If you see websites promising to ship pills at a later stage, or tell you that you "don’t need an ultrasound,” be extremely cautious. The pills may be illegal and unregulated.
